good: Good ol Nick
bad: CGen

I liked this Cage flick, because it had the same appeal as blockbusters by Nicolas Cage like 'Gone in 60 seconds' and 'Con Air'. Cage has once again pulled off a role that casts him as the antithesis of his actual nature as a low-life criminal who is well intentioned and far more than meets the eye. The strike against this movie in my mind is two fold. 1) Poor Computer Graphics. CG can be a powerful addition to an action movie, but when it doesn't jive with the rest of the film you begin criticizing the movie's credibility as a whole. I was very disappointed in Cage's last film "Ghost Rider" for the same reason as this one. The CG just doesn't jive in either of these films. 2) Disappointing ending. I love to see a movie where there is an "Ah-hah" moment, where everything preceding that moment finally makes sense. "Next" did have this appeal, but the ending was so abbreviated after the ah-hah moment that I was left wanting more. Maybe this is by design, but it was a little bit of a let-down. On a side note - this movie (whether by design or chance) was released in relatively close proximity to two other movies tempering with the time compendium - "DeJaVu" and "Premonition". It is for this reason I find myself comparing these movies. If I had to rank these three I would go with #1 De Ja Vu #2 Next and #3 Premonition.

verdict: Rent it - don't buy the DVD though
